Annie Graham ( Toni Collette ) is a artist, who works on detailed miniature figures in her dollhouse. She gets the news of her mother Ellen Leigh death, who was living in hospice during her last days. Annie’s daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) usually stays in her tree house making drawing in her notebook.
With respect to the family, old woman shares strong bond with Annie as well as to her hubby Steve (Gabriel Byrne ), who is a psychotherapist. Her grandson Peter (Alex Wolff) likes to spend most of his time with friends as teenager. Annie meet on of the friend of her mother Joan (Ann Dowd), who reveals few dark secrets about the family and private rituals carried by Ellen.
Joan claims that Ellen did not leave and persuades the bereaved to a séance. Annie begins to feel the presence of Ellen in the house and learns that there is far more secrets to reveal. Strange things starts to happen capable of destroying the destiny of Graham family forever.
